Personal Profile : Michael Mutale

Michael Mutale is a GIS professional and lecturer with over 20 years of experience in academia and industry, specializing in remote sensing, geomatics, and photogrammetry. His work experience spans across higher education institutions, local authorities, and mining sector development, combining advanced surveying techniques with sustainable development practices in Zambia and internationally through his studies in Germany.

He is a multi-skilled professional with proven expertise in applying geospatial technologies to land governance, sustainable land management, and socio-economic development challenges. Specifically, this covers land use/cover change mapping, photogrammetry, remote sensing, spatial data analysis, land tenure systems, and GIS database implementation. His expertise extends to lecturing in academic courses, mentoring students, and integrating digital technologies for environmental education. Furthermore, he has led specialized survey training programs at Lumwana Mining Company, focusing on advanced geomatics applications and mining regulations.

During his tenure at various institutions, Michael has contributed significantly to the development of geomatics education and practice. He successfully integrated Python and R programming into the Numerical Methods course at Copperbelt University, enabling students to gain practical experience in applying programming to solve geomatics problems. At the University of Namibia and Namibia University of Science and Technology, he effectively taught Remote Sensing and Spatial Modeling courses, consistently receiving positive student feedback and supervising various bachelor projects in areas such as Precise GNSS Heighting, Traverse Adjustment Analysis, and UAV Mapping.

Michael has further demonstrated his expertise in the practical application of geomatics through his work at Lusaka City Council, where he managed GIS infrastructure, conducted in-house training on ArcGIS and GPS, and led fieldwork activities for road design and surveying. His contributions extended to digitizing land parcels, updating GIS databases from hard-copy plans, and playing a key role in the Land Administration in Chaisa informal settlement pilot project.

He also has extensive experience in land administration and sustainable development, having developed and implemented integrated land administration systems for mining regions at Kitwe City Council and pioneered the integration of drone surveying and terrestrial remote sensing for stability monitoring in mining areas. His work has consistently demonstrated the practical application of geospatial technologies in solving real-world challenges.

Michael is a holder of a Master of Science in Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Land Surveying from the University of Zambia. He has recently enhanced his skills in digital technologies for environmental education through intensive DAAD-sponsored training. He is a member of both the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and the Surveying Institute of Zambia (SIZ), demonstrating his commitment to professional development and industry standards.
